The role

Barker Gotelee is a highly regarded Chambers/Legal 500 rated firm established in 1988, solely located at Martlesham Heath, to the east of Ipswich in Suffolk.

We are seeking a highly motivated fee-earner, 5+ years PQE, to join our Family Law Team. In the first instance, this is a full-time, fixed term contract to cover maternity leave, commencing early March 2022, for a maximum of one year. The start-date is to facilitate a proper handover of matters from the post-holder, before she commences her maternity leave at the beginning of April. This is a superb opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated Family Law Practitioner to join a forward-thinking department in a highly regarded, long established, Legal 500 Top Tier Firm.

This role will require managing and taking responsibility for a caseload of private family law matters. It will suit a solicitor or legal executive with 5+ years PQE. However, this PQE is expressed as a guideline only. We are happy to hear from anyone who can demonstrate the necessary capabilities required to effectively fulfil the role. You will also be required to be registered as a member of Resolution.

Additionally, we are also now beginning the search to find a suitable successor for our current Head of the Family Department, who will be retiring in 2023. This is also a full-time role which will require managing and developing an existing caseload of varied and high-quality matters, which includes divorce, dissolution of civil partnerships, separation, pre-nuptial/post-nuptial agreements, financial remedy applications and private law children cases. The client portfolio includes high-net-worth clients, and you will need to be adept at adding to this. You will need to manage a small team of fee-earners and administrative staff. Some previous experience of having successfully managed other people, ideally a team or department, is therefore desirable.

A possible scenario for the ideal candidate would be for you to join us on a full-time, permanent basis, in the first instance to cover the period of maternity leave described above. This would enable working with the current Head of Department for in excess of a year, with the idea being that you would then be promoted to Head of Department, upon his retirement.

Candidate specification

All applicants must be commercially minded, team-oriented, able to work confidently and efficiently and put excellent client service at the heart of their work. You must also have proven fee-earning, case management and client development skills, together with superior organisational and financial management skills. A desire and ability to contribute effectively to marketing and business-development activities, both for the Department and the Firm as a whole, is also required.
