Family law is my area and I am the partner in charge of the family department. I have been a member of the Law Society Family Panel, the Law Society Advanced Family Panel and a Resolution Accredited Specialist. I am also a trained collaborative lawyer – http://www.macdonaldoates.co.uk/portfolio/collaborative-law/ . I deal with all areas of family law including divorce, children, civil partnership, unmarried couples and domestic abuse and violence. I am the past chair of the East Hampshire Domestic Violence and Abuse Forum. I currently work part time as a Deputy District Judge, so see family law matters from both “sides”.

I am also a Family Law Arbitrator http://www.macdonaldoates.co.uk/portfolio/arbitration/ – the latest development in family law dispute resolution http://www.macdonaldoates.co.uk/portfolio/alternatives-to-court/ . The family law arbitration scheme is run by The Institute of Family Law Arbitrators, a joint venture between Resolution and the FLBA. Parties must agree to enter arbitration but the decision of the arbitrator is then binding on them. The parties decide what issues are decided, as well as how and when: it could be done by paper submissions, telephone hearing or anything else. At a time when the courts are in a terrible mess, this can save months of time and thousands of pounds in costs.

I work primarily out of our Midhurst office in West Sussex (we also have an office in Petersfield, Hampshire) and primarily cover West Sussex, Hampshire and Surrey, though I have clients in London and beyond.

Specialties: I deal with all areas of family law including:
pre and post nutial agreements
finances (including companies, trusts, foreign assets, jointly owned property – TOLATA)
children (contact, residence, specific issue and prohibited steps orders, removal from the jurisdiction, abduction, etc.)
civil partnership dissolution
unmarried couples
cohabitation agreements
domestic abuse and violence
