Session 6 overview – Domestic Abuse and Financial Abuse

Margaret Kelly-Edwards solicitor, mediator, arbitrator collaborative solicitor and Resolution Trainer, Harish Patel Independent Financial Adviser and member of Resolution Standards Committee and Mary Waring chartered accountant, chartered financial planner and Resolution Accredited Adviser will explore how domestic abuse particularly financial abuse can impact on a person’s ability to engage in financial remedy negotiations and proceedings.

We will look at
  • Safeguarding and how to assess safety
  • what is domestic abuse, with a particular focus on financial abuse, and how to spot it
  • what signs and behaviours might alert you to domestic abuse and financial abuse
  • Where to signpost the victim of financial abuse
  • Financial Vulnerability and the impact of Financial Literacy on women.
  • Examples where financial abuse is present and how to approach the problems raised

Who is this session for?

All Family Professionals and Finance Professionals who would like more of an insight into financial abuse and how to advise clients who may be subject to such abuse.


Meet the presenter:

Harish Patel is a Independent Financial Adviser and a member of the Resolution Standards Committee.
Harish has been advising individuals and businesses for over 35 years and during that time helped divorcing clients navigate the financial maze, especially those women who have not had experience in dealing with financial matters during marriage. Most women feel intimidated by financial jargon the myriad of options available and are in need of guidance at a critical juncture in their lives.
Harish is also the Membership Officer for the Personal Finance Society for the Lancashire, Merseyside and Cumbria Region and acts as the Society of Mortgage Professionals Advocate for the North West.

Margaret Kelly-Edwards is a consultant solicitor with Ketley Miller Joels a niche firm of family professionals based in Mayfair London.

A skilled, talented and experienced family solicitor and practitioner, qualifying in the UK in 1982, and in Australia in 1985.

Margaret is also an accredited mediator and now trained in the hybrid model. One of the first arbitrators to train and am qualified to hear both financial and children’s cases. Margaret also sat as a deputy district judge, mainly at the central family court, until the end of 2024 to allow me to concentrate on Non curt dispute resolution processes.

I am delighted to have qualified as a trainer with Resolution and look forward to meeting lots of members .at the various interesting and educational courses being run by Resolution.

Mary Waring is a chartered financial planner, chartered accountant and Resolution Accredited Specialist.

She is the founder of Wealth for Women Ltd, an award-winning financial services company, specialising in financial advice to women going through divorce, especially those who haven’t been responsible for the finances during their marriage.

Mary no longer provides regulated financial advice but continues to support clients through this particularly challenging time who need trustworthy expertise and guidance. She works with her clients, so they understand the options available to them based on their financial situation and know how to improve their future.

Mary was a member of the Duxbury Working Party which was responsible for the recent revision of the Duxbury Tables.
