Tom Burgess

I am a solicitor specialising in family law and, unlike many family lawyers, my focus is on helping my clients to reach an amicable agreement quickly, constructively and cost-effectively. I do this by working with them to find the best approach for them, whether it be by advising them as they seek to reach an agreement themselves or go through mediation, or negotiating on their behalf. Taking matters to court should always be a last resort but, when it is the only option, I have extensive experience of helping my clients through it every step of the way.

Clients come to me for advice on all aspects of relationship breakdown, including divorce, financial disputes between divorcing spouses and separating cohabitees, and arrangements for children. I also provide advice on pre- and post-nuptial agreements.

I have considerable experience of complex matters, for example those involving businesses and substantial inherited assets, and matters involving net assets of £5 million or more. I have worked on many cases with an international element, including dealing with assets in France, Spain, Italy, the US, Dubai, Switzerland, Greece, Portugal and Turkey.

I have advised on a wide range of disputes over arrangements for children, including those involving health issues or changes of school, and cases where one parent wishes to relocate, either within the UK or overseas.

I have a particular interest in the legal issues surrounding fertility treatment, donor conception and surrogacy arrangements.

Although I am primarily based in our Oxford office, I also regularly spend time in our Milton Keynes office and I am able to meet with clients there.
