Following our letter to party leaders urging them to prioritise much-needed family justice reforms in their election manifestos, Resolution has now launched our Fairness for Families manifesto.
Resolution’s manifesto asks parliamentary candidates to commit to advocate and support the following policies in the next Parliament:
- Re-introduction of no-fault divorce legislation as a matter of urgency.
- Legal protection for cohabiting couples on relationship breakdown or death of their partner.
- Protection of victims of domestic abuse in the family courts through the re-introduction of the Domestic Abuse Bill.
- Provide adequate funding for early legal advice for separating couples.

Resolution is determined to make the voice of family justice professionals heard during this General Election campaign, so that the next Parliament understands the importance of ensuring families dealing with separation and divorce receive the support they need.

Now we need your help to send the same message to parliamentary candidates, by writing to your local candidates and setting up a meeting to discuss the importance of family law reform.
We’ve developed a toolkit with information, advice on setting up a meeting with your parliamentary candidates and template resources to support your involvement.
A word from the Chair of Resolution’s Family Law Reform Group:
“As we approach the general election, parliamentary candidates need to know and understand the urgent need to implement family law reform. Resolution’s Fairness for Families manifesto asks parliamentary candidates to support divorce reform and reintroducing domestic abuse legislation, as well as introducing at least basic rights for cohabiting couples and funding more early legal advice. With around 100,000 divorces each year and an estimated 3.9 million children of separated couples, the next government must progress these reforms without delay.”
