Jo qualified in 1992, having trained at Taylor Vinters and Thomson & Co (Cambridge) before moving to J Garrard & Allen in Olney where she reached partner in two years and established the family department. Since then, Jo has established Hawkins Family Law (2001) a specialist family law practice and has sought to enhance her own legal skills, continually learning to ensure that her clients benefit from her commercial and financial skill set in addition to her multifaceted ADR skills. Jo’s forte is looking for practical outcomes, particularly in complex financial matters where her depth of knowledge of business structures, funding and pensions facilitates this. Her strength and focus is in resolving financial matters, particularly where the assets are complex in structure or multi-jurisdictional.
Typically, Jo works with company directors/shareholders/owners or those individuals who bring complex intergenerational family wealth and inherited assets with them, or more recently crypto/bitcoin resources. This client base means her ability to assimilate information, assess potential structures for resolution and advance her client’s position is finely honed.
Jo is a Resolution Accredited Specialist in finances and children matters, a Resolution trained Mediator and hybrid Mediator, an experienced collaborative lawyer and an Arbitrator, and draws on all her training to support her clients. Recently Jo has launched within Hawkins Family Law the Resolution Together approach again recognising that choice of forum for resolution is imperative as is flexibility and costs proportionality.
Taking time always to listen, and cross refer to other experts within her contacts or to the in house counsellors, Jo assesses what her client’s needs are, looks at financial matters commercially and ensures that honest, robust and detailed advice is at the center of all she does.
