Sarah Smith

Sarah worked as a family lawyer for around twenty-five years, specialising in divorce, related finances, and arrangements for children.  Approx. half her legal career was in London law firms and the remainder at Berwins in Harrogate.

She left legal practice in 2020 to set up her own mediation practice Sarah Smith Mediation Services.

Sarah qualified as a mediator in 2012 and is an accredited Mediator with the Family Mediation Council (FMCA).  Sarah works with couples to sort their finances and/or arrangements for their children post-separation.  She also occasionally does work with wider family members including grandparents or helps clients whose situation does not neatly fit into the usual areas, e.g. discussing pets, school applications, relocations, TOLATA etc.

Sarah is also a Child Inclusive mediator, i.e. qualified to include children in the mediation process when it will help for their voices to be heard.  She is also a trained Hybrid mediator and has seen that aspect of her practice grow over the last 2-3 years.

In 2019, Sarah qualified as only one of 10 people in the UK as a Parenting Coordinator. This innovative approach provides an alternative support after court proceedings, to help families avoid continued conflict or repeated applications to court – a better way forward for children in the long term.

Sarah has a reputation for getting things done; helping to unlock even the most conflictual impasses, and support clients to find a better way forward.
