Essential Communications Skills – Getting the Edge

Strengthen your approach to communication and transform your working relationships at every level with this practical and interactive course.

Whether in client meetings, mediation, before a judge, with lawyers and even in our non-professional world, this course will develop high-level communication skills that can be easily adopted.

How we speak and how we read the verbal and non-verbal cues of others is vital. This is particularly so when our clients are navigating their own choppy waters. Our communication skills are also important when interacting with other professionals with competing pressures.

The danger in our profession is that we focus solely on the factual matrix of each case, relevant statute, precedent, procedure and the structuring of arguments. We can forget that our words have power.

Taking examples from a pressured family law practice, this course offers:

  •  A clearer understanding of how disputes escalate.
  •  Improved communication with clients.
  •  More effective listening.
  •  Learning to read non-verbal cues.
  •  Interpreting clues from clients’ patterns of speaking to understand their needs.
  •  Understanding the difference between sympathy and empathy.
  •  Strategies for dealing with difficult clients.
  •  Processes for managing difficult conversations with clients and colleagues.
  •  Recognising our own patterns of avoidance when cases become challenging.
  •  Improving professional relationships.
  •  Reducing stress.
  •  Reducing risk of complaints.

Whether in client meetings, mediation, before a judge, with lawyers and even in our non-professional world, the skills developed in this course can be easily adopted to influence the success of our relationships at every level.
