Ian qualified as a solicitor in 1992 and was trained as mediator by Henry Brown and Felicity White in 1996 in the first round of Resolution (then SFLA) mediation training.

Ian is particularly proud of being named the inaugural Resolution Regional Champion in the 2023 Awards for his very long-standing active commitment to Resolution on a regional level. During his career Ian has also been a member of the Law Society Family Law Committee, a trustee of the FMA, a member of Resolution’s DR Committee, winner of a Law Society Excellence Award and the long-standing chair of Resolution’s Devon Region. Ian founded his own practice in 2012 which has grown to a Legal 500/Chambers ranked practice of 20 lawyers.

As mediator Ian is FMC accredited and Law Society accredited, a PPC, trained in child inclusive mediation, civil/family hybrid mediation (via a version of the training run by Henry Brown through the ADR group in 2012) and one of the initial cohort trained in FMA’s advanced Integrated Mediation model. Ian is also a Collaborative Family Lawyer, a Resolution Together Lawyer and was one of the initial child law arbitrators on the IFLA Child Law Arbitration Scheme. In his legal career Ian had 27 years as a member of the Law Society Children Panel (recently relinquished).

Ian is positive about how the practice family law will evolve and believes that the development and sharing of skills improves us all as family lawyers.
